Quest Viewer — User Manual

Quest Viewer displays your Unity VR application, running on Meta Quest headsets, live on a Windows PC. One headset or a room full of them, side by side.

Quest Viewer receives streams — it does not capture arbitrary Quest games. The headset must be running an app built with the free Quest Streaming SDK. If you are an instructor or venue operator and your VR content was made by someone else, ask the developer to add the SDK. It takes them about ten minutes and costs nothing.

1. What you need

Component	Requirement
PC	Windows 10 version 1809 or newer, or Windows 11. 64-bit.
WebView2 Runtime	Already present on Windows 11 and most Windows 10 machines. Video decoding depends on it. If tiles appear but stay black, install it from Microsoft.
Headset	Meta Quest 2, Quest 3, Quest 3S or Quest Pro, running an app built with the Quest Streaming SDK.
Network	Headset and PC on the same Wi-Fi network. A wired PC on the same router also works. See the network notes in troubleshooting — this is the most common source of problems.

No .NET installation is needed. No account, and no sign-up for the free tier.

2. Installing

Microsoft Store — recommended

Install from the Microsoft Store. The app is signed and distributed by Microsoft, so there are no security warnings, and it updates itself.

Portable build

For managed machines where the Store is blocked — arcades, training floors, locked-down classrooms. Download the zip from the releases page, unzip it anywhere, and run QuestViewer.exe.

Keep the folder contents together. The executable needs the files alongside it.
Windows will warn that the file is unsigned. Choose More info → Run anyway.
A SHA-256 checksum is published with each release if you need to verify the download.

The portable build does not update itself. Check the releases page occasionally, or use the Store version where you can.

3. First run and firewall

Launch Quest Viewer. The title bar reads “Listening for Quest devices on the network…”
Windows Firewall will prompt on first launch. Allow access on Private networks. Discovery will not work if you deny it — this is the single most common cause of “no headsets appear”.
Put on the headset and launch your VR app.
A tile appears in Quest Viewer within a few seconds, moves through Discovered → Connecting → Live, and starts showing video.

If you denied the firewall prompt by mistake, open Windows Security → Firewall & network protection → Allow an app through firewall, find Quest Viewer, and tick Private. Then restart the app.

4. The interface

The sidebar

The narrow strip down the left side switches what the main area shows.

The title bar

Left to right: the app name and version, the licence chip (FREE, TRIAL · 12d or PRO · 214d) — click it to manage your licence — then the connection status, and a pill showing how many headsets are live.

Views

Tile — the grid. Best for watching several headsets at once.
List — compact rows. Best for managing many devices, or when you care about names and states rather than pictures.
Fullscreen — double-click any tile. Press Esc to come back. A toolbar along the bottom carries stream quality and recording.

5. Streaming, quality and multiple headsets

Starting and stopping

Streams start automatically when a headset is discovered. To control one by hand, right-click its tile:

Stream quality

Three presets, per headset. Higher settings need more Wi-Fi headroom, so if video stutters with several headsets running, step down rather than blaming the network.

Cool & Light is named for the headset, not the picture. Encoding video costs battery and generates heat inside the Quest; on a long session — a training day, a busy arcade shift — the lower preset noticeably extends how long a headset stays comfortable.

The free tier caps at 720p. High is available with the trial or a Pro licence.

Multiple headsets

Every headset running your app appears on its own tile, discovered automatically. There are no IP addresses to type and no pairing codes.

The free tier streams one headset at a time. A second headset is discovered and listed, but its stream is held until the first one stops. The trial and paid tiers remove the limit — the practical ceiling becomes your Wi-Fi, not the licence.

6. Recording a session

Recording is a paid feature, available during the trial.

Right-click a tile → Start Recording, or use the toolbar in fullscreen.
Right-click → Stop Recording to finish and write the file.

Recordings are saved on your own computer and are never uploaded anywhere. Each headset records independently, so you can capture one participant while others stream normally.

Stop the recording before closing the app. A file still being written when the app exits may be incomplete.

The free tier

No account, no sign-up, no expiry. Install it on as many machines as you like.

The trial

Click the licence chip in the title bar, then Start free trial. Fifteen days of everything, no card and no account.

It starts when you click it, not when you install. That is deliberate — you should not lose trial days to a machine you set up last month and have not touched since. When it ends, the app returns to the free tier. Nothing is deleted and nothing breaks.

Activating a licence you have bought

Your key arrives by email immediately after purchase.
Click the licence chip in the title bar, or the pricing icon in the sidebar then I have a key.
Paste the key and click Activate. The chip changes to PRO.

Moving a licence to a different computer

A licence covers a fixed number of computers — three on Pro, ten on Organization. To free a slot, open the licence window on the machine you are retiring and click Deactivate this PC. You can then activate the same key elsewhere. Do this as often as you like.

If a machine died before you could deactivate it, email support and we will release the slot for you.

When an annual licence lapses

An annual licence includes twelve months of updates and support. If you do not renew, the app returns to the free tier — it does not stop working, and the version you already installed keeps running. Lifetime licences never expire.

Refunds

Fourteen days, no forms. Email us and we will process it.

8. Troubleshooting

No headset appears

Work down this list in order — the first three account for nearly every case.

Same network? The headset and PC must be on the same Wi-Fi. Check the headset is not still connected to a phone hotspot or a guest SSID.
Firewall allowed on Private networks? See first run.
Router blocking device-to-device traffic? Guest networks and a router setting usually called client isolation, AP isolation or wireless isolation stop devices seeing each other. This is common on hotel, campus and corporate Wi-Fi. Use a normal network, or a dedicated router.
Is the headset app actually built with the SDK? Quest Viewer cannot see apps that do not include it.
Is your PC's clock correct? This one is not obvious. Discovery messages are timestamped and rejected if the two clocks disagree by more than a few minutes, so a PC whose time has drifted will silently ignore every headset. Open Settings → Time & language → Date & time and click Sync now.

A tile appears but the video is black

Install the WebView2 Runtime and restart the app. Video rendering depends on it.

Everything is capped at 720p

That is the free tier. Start the trial or activate a licence.

A second headset is discovered but will not stream

Also the free tier — one stream at a time. The tile stays listed and starts as soon as the first stream stops.

Video stutters or lags with several headsets

Wi-Fi bandwidth, almost always. Lower the stream quality on some or all headsets, put the PC on Ethernet, and prefer 5 GHz over 2.4 GHz. A cheap access point shared with a building's general traffic is not enough for several 1080p streams.

The licence window is blank, or a key will not activate

Check the machine has internet access — activation contacts our licensing provider. If the key is correct and the machine limit is not exhausted, email support with the key and we will look at it.

9. Where your data lives

Video never leaves your network. Streams travel directly between headset and PC. We run no media servers, so we could not see your video even if we wanted to.
Recordings stay on your computer. Never uploaded.
Settings and licence state live under %APPDATA%\QuestViewer.
No analytics, telemetry or tracking of any kind.
